Gold Facts - Worth knowing
Troy ounce, 18 carat gold, gold purity, ounce gram - what does that actually mean?
For precious metals, such as gold, there are various data on how:
- 18 carat gold
- troy ounce
- Ounce in grams
- 1 ounce gold
- 24 K Gold
- kt. / ct. (carat)
- gold content
- degree of purity
- Density of gold.
Do you know the difference?
For those who have so their problems with it the following definition should be helpful.
purity of precious metalsEveryone knows gold and it is also known that it is a very sought-after precious metal. Since the precious metal in nature likes to combine with other materials such as copper and silver, one first needs a definition of how clean or pure the precious metal is.
It is not only with gold that the degree of purity or fineness is used to determine purity or impurity. The degree of purity is indicated either in carats, per mille or percent.
The counting method for carats is up to 24, for per mille up to 1000 and for percent up to 100.
It should be noted that the percentage of the gold atom (Au) is given as a percentage.
The comparison is as follows (whereby 1 value would be sufficient to determine the fineness of gold):
|Carat (kt.)||Promille (‰)||Percent (%) approx.|
Table: Gold carat system compared to per mille and percent
The following graph illustrates the gold content / gold content once again.
The unit carat is also marked with kt. International with ct.
Carat at Gold - The Difference to the Gemstone Diamond:
You may be a little confused right now because you know the term "carat" also in connection with diamonds. However, it is not the degree of fineness that is designated, but the weight of these gemstones. One carat corresponds to 0.200 grams here.
Now we've talked about the gold content. Now let's get to the weight of gold.
Gold Weight - Ounce Gold and Conversion Ounce Gram
As with the degree of fineness, the weight of precious metals is also subject to various specifications.
The most important units are the ounce (oz), the troy ounce (oz tr) and the known gram (g). I will not go into historical aspects here, because there are many other good and detailed pages for it.
It should be noted, however, that there are two important types of ounce. For precious metals, the troy ounce is used. The ounce of 28.3495 grams is used in other merchandise.
However, only the term "ounce" is commonly used when trading gold. So don't let this confuse you.
The conversion of the units ounce to gram is as follows:
1 troy ounce (oz tr) = 31.1034768 grams
1 ounce (oz) = 28.349523125 grams
Half an ounce is therefore 15,55 g.
It is important to know the conversion of the troy ounce, as the gold price per troy ounce is given in US dollars (USD).
1 ounce of gold currently costs approx. 1.110€ (as of: 01/2018....Note market fluctuations).
Gold NuggetGold nuggets are probably the best known and most natural form of gold. This refers to small gold nuggets that have been formed by nature through erosion.
The largest gold nugget ever found was found in Australia in October 1872. The nugget weighed as much as 214.32 kilograms. An unbelievable mass, which would have a current market value of approx. 5.5 million euros.
The graphics shown show real gold nuggets. These figures are rather inconceivable in Germany. Gold is usually found in the smallest form, the so-called gold flitter. In Germany in May 2004, the largest nugget to date with a weight of 9.64 grams was found in the Schwarzatal valley. To be regarded as rather tiny in international comparison.
The gold digger camps in North Queensland (Australia) should only be mentioned as an example. Until the middle of the last century there was a gold rush and the rivers along the Telegraph Road towards Cape York were cleared by the diggers. Today only a few hundred, equipped with metal detectors, search every square centimetre for gold nuggets. This gives the searcher a few thousand dollars in sales, month after month, depending on the effort involved. This could be seen in the documentary "Telegraph Road", which was broadcasted on 3Sat on 26.01.2010.
density of goldGold is heavy - very heavy. The following table provides an overview of the ranking of substances. Since tungsten has almost the same density as gold, it is used by gold bar forgers who fill a gold bar core with tungsten. The gold bar would be the same size as a real gold bar and no one would ever find out the scam without drilling the bar.
The density of the gold makes it possible for gold washers to separate the gold from other materials in a gold washing pan or a gold sluice (Sluice Box).
Easily determine the density of gold yourself
The density of gold can also be easily determined at home thanks to Archimedes. In my video I explain step by step how this works. You can download the form used in the video here.
